Can You Clean Without Harmful Chemicals?<\/b><\/p>\n
These days, we\u2019re spending a lot more time at home.\u00a0We\u2019re cooking more at home, working more at home, and playing more at home.\u00a0So it would stand to reason, our homes need more cleaning as well!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Keeping our homes clean is an important and continuous task. You want products that are reliable, simple to use and that get the job done quickly.<\/p>\n For generations, homes have been cleaned using cleaning chemicals; availability and variety have grown in recent decades so that there\u2019s an entire aisle in the grocery store dedicated to just these products. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n So with such choice and bounty available, why would you consider alternatives?<\/p>\n Why clean without cleaning chemicals?<\/b><\/p>\n When it comes to our lives, finding nourishing foods and personal care products with the best ingredients is simple.\u00a0 <\/span>How do we find out what\u2019s in a pre-made meal or new shampoo? We read the label.<\/p>\n Unlike personal care products, cosmetics and food,\u00a0cleaning products\u00a0don\u2019t have to provide a complete ingredients list on their label.\u00a0 <\/span>According to the\u00a0Environmental Working Group\u00a0(EWG) only 7% of cleaning products adequately disclose their contents.\u00a0 <\/span>And the ingredients aren\u2019t always understandable. (1)<\/p>\n So even if you\u2019re diligent and read the label, it\u2019s not always possible to understand what you\u2019re bringing into your home without contacting the manufacturer.<\/p>\n Why does label transparency matter?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n Our health is the main reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We know cleaning chemicals can be dangerous, thanks to the warnings they do have to include on the labels. However, according to\u00a0EcoWatch, of the 84,000 chemicals on the market, only about 1% have been studied for safety. (2)<\/p>\n After assessing more than 2000 cleaning products,\u00a0the Environmental Working Group found that 53%\u00a0contain ingredients known to harm the lungs, and this\u00a0supports findings\u00a0of a recent long-term study into cleaning sprays and lung function. (3)<\/p>\n Without full testing, there is no way to know the full extent of long term health impact.<\/p>\n Don’t I need chemicals to clean, especially now?<\/b><\/p>\n At the moment with our current global health crisis, cleaning is of utmost importance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Understanding\u00a0the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting is critical to performing each task properly.<\/p>\n Bleach and other chemicals used to disinfect surfaces\u00a0become inactive if they come in contact with organic matter.
